Abstract EN

Tree representation of characters is an important stage in the process of character recog¬nition using tree grammar.

Such a representation can be employed in a later stage, called grammatical inference, to construct a tree grammar used in the recognition.

This paper de¬scribes a suitable method for tree representation of hand-written Arabic characters.

As sev¬eral Arabic characters are composed of two or more isolated subpatterns, skeleton of the character is firstly reprocessed to convert it into a connected one.

The reprocessed skeleton is then coded, and finally tree representation is obtained.

Application of the method to sev¬eral hand-written Arabic characters is presented.

The method is implemented on an IBM Pc computer using the programming language Pascal.
