The antiprotozoi effect of ketoconazole aganist the pathogenetic protozoan Leishmania topiea and Leishmania donovani promastigote stage, was characterized.

Ketoconazole at concentrations of 0.05.

0.1 and 0.2 caused a significant reduction only in grow th of both spccies of Leishmania.

All of the tested concentrations inhibited the synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein contents at different rates.

The inhibition was time and concentration dependent.

The inhibition was more pronounced in Leishmania donovani than Leishmania tropica since the concentration of 0.2 of the drug caused a total inhibition of L.
