Propagation of two chill peach cultivars by stem cuttings. I. Anatomical aspects

Stem cuttings of Flordabelle and Flordagold peach cultivars were prepared and treated with 1000 ppm IB A solution to investigate possible site(s) of adventitious root formation and possible role for sclerenchyma tissue on emergence of root prirnordia.

The results indicated that adventitious roots developed on the stem cuttings of both peach cultivars, at all sampling dates, were considered wound roots.

In addition, latent or preformed roots on stem cuttings were not detected and callus formation preceeded adventitious root development On the other hand, two types of wound roots have been identified: a) nodal roots that developed externally at node area from callus after transplanting the rooted cuttings and b) internal roots that developed from cambium, phloem and cortex.

Nodal roots were found to be thin and internal roots to be thick and long.

Even though sclerenchyma tissue in both peach cultivars was found to form continuous ring, the study showed that penetration of the developing adventitious roots through this tissue was not restricted.
