Abstract EN

Initial water content is one of the basic factors affecting the process of water infiltration into soil.

This fact is often overlooked by engineers and workers in the field of irrigation and water resources because there is no clear and simple practical method for adjusting infiltration functions (specially those of empirical nature) from one initial water content to another.

The present stedy aimed at treating this matter by using Philip’s infiltration equation in its empirical form and with the help of some of the physical and mathematical background used in deriving this equation.

The study included water infiltration tests for three different soils with three initial water content levels for each soil.

After evluating the parameters of the infiltration equatiion for each soil and initial water content, a simple and practical procedure for adjusting these parameters due to water content changes is proposed.

The validity of the proposed adjustment procedure for the infiltration function is checked and found acceptable for practical purposes.
