Abstract EN

This study deals with one of the most pertinent, yet most often neglected, aspect of education in the Arab world, namely non-formal education which is treated by many educaional authorities as the ‘orphan’ of national education.

After delineating the concept of non-formal education and exhibiting the present charactersitics of this kind of education in the Arab region, the study shows how formal Arab education falls short of achieving its declared objectives, particularly in regard to its impact on national development.

The study folows up with an expostition of the signficance of non-formal education and its relevance to national development as well as the importance of integrating its activities with formal education in one concerted effort.

The study also exhibits certain non-formal education areas and programmes felt to be tenable for application in the Arab region in the light of changing needs.

At the end, recommendations are made to render non-formal education in the Arab region an efficient factor in enhancing and promoting over-all development.
