Abstract EN

This empirical study describes patterns of family interference in the behaviour of a random sample of University Youths consisting of (508) male and female undergraduate students at the University of Jordan.

The data obtained show that family interference takes on flexible forms that include: exchange of views, suggestions, and encouragement.

The data also show that family interference in females tends to be less flexible than in males, especially in the age group “20-24”.

This represents a significant development in family power strcuture, since it challenges some old generalizations that portrayed the Arab family as authoritarian and partriarchal, The data, however, do not nullify these generalizations, since in other areas of behaviour, especially those related to family honour, and modesty code, Jordanian family tends to be overtly authoritarian and patriarchal.
