Identification of traffic accident-prone locations in greater Amman

Abstract EN

This study is a part of a comprehensive safety programme for the city of Greater Amman, the capital of Jordan.

It aims to identify and priority rank the dangerous locations in the city.

Accident data were obtained from the Traffic Police Department.

The significance of this study comes from the great effort that was paid to conduct the traffic counts.

These were carried out manually by students during the summer at 37 sites.

Summer traffic volumes data were extrapolated for the rest of the year using seasonal expansion factors which were based upon monthly percentages of transportation petrol sales.

The critical rate method was used to identify the locations that need imperative improvements.

The accident frequency, accident rate, critical rate, and accident seriousness measures were incorporated to develop a technique for priority ranking of these sites for future improvement.

The study has identified the accident-prone locations in the city, priority ranked them, and those need serious improvement were distinguished.

It was proven in the study that relying on the accident frequency as a sole criterion for identifying or priority ranking of hazardous locations may be misleading.
