Abstract EN

Alteration products of olivine in I he noli tic xenoliths from the Aritain volcano, NE-Jordan were examined using petrological and Mosbauer methods.

Hie alteration products have been found to consist predominantly of Fe-Mg symplcctite.

The replacement of olivine by the symplcctite was not isochemical.

The most significant features of alteration are introduction of water to the rock, oxidation of iron and removal of magnesium and silicon in varying proportions.

The alteration of olivine was mainly due to weathering at surface conditions.
