Abstract EN

This paper presents a critical appraisal of the term Fuhulat a/- Shu'ara' "the excellence of poets." The term recurred many times in the works of critics for many years.

It has been associated with different levels of interpretation as well as with varying types of references.

The variation in interpretation and type of reference is a product of the semantic flexibility and adaptibility inherent in the term.

This led me to posit several hypotheses and related similarities pertaining to the poetic work.

the culture of the poet and his local environment.

The fact that I detected some vagueness and confusion which beset the usage of this term ever since it was coined, has led me to tackle this narrow area of research.

Inspite of the historical importance of the term.

the vagueness and confusion persisted.

This resulted in a diversification of opinions and produced conflicting judgements on the part of critics and Arabic poetry scholars
