A favourite theme in the American Civil War and later in the World War I was the bitterness against war and army life.

Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway were foremost among the writers who used the novel to depict the impact of war on lheir protagoni~t~ and show their disgust towards war.

To dramatize the result of war and the mililary environment, the writers did not set Olll to write the story of high ranking officers and officials but rather 10 write the story of an enlisted private joining a small regiment duro ing the American Civil War" The l?ed Hadge of Courage, and the story of an enlisled ambulance-driver at the Italian front during World War I, A Farewellto Arms_ Thu~, the lwo writer~ lurn Iheir protagoni<;ls into every man trying to find meaning for any war.

Physical wOllnd, and psychological damage playa vilal role in the live, of the two protagonists, and in the development of the novels.

This paper is an atlempl 10explore this theme by focusing particularly upon the conflict and the side effects of such wounds and show how these wound, mark a lurning point in the lives of the two heroes, leading Henry F1cming to victory, manhood, heroism.
