English Abstract

The occurrence of chemical pollutants indoor such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) and heavy metals are gaining great environmental concerns due to their impacts on health and environment.

This study aimed to investigate thelevels of PAHs and heavy metals in indoor and outdoor dust samples that collected during 2013from two sites namely : city center and residential areas in al-Karak province, Jordan.

The PAHs extracted from the dust samples using Soxhlet method and their concentration were determined using Gas Chromatography equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID).

Heavy metals were determined using Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

The settled dust samples were collected from indoor environment including living room and kitchen.

While, outdoor dust samples were collected close to each site to assess the anthropogenic activities impacts on indoor pollution.

The total concentration of PAHs (ΣPAHs) at the city center of indoor and outdoor environments were3.28 and 2.17 µg g-1, respectively.

The investigated residential areas showed highest concentration of PAHs inside houses in the kitchen compared to their concentration in the living room and outdoor.

The ΣPAHs concentration were 2.78, 2.04 and 0.72 µg g-1 in the kitchen, living room and outdoor, respectively.

The structural diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that most of them originated from combustion process (pyrogenic).

The lifetime cancer risk was found lower than the maximum acceptable level ranged between 1.00x10-5 to 1.00x10-12.

Elevated levels of heavy metalsCr, Cu, Ni, V, Mn, Ti, As and Pb were found in the indoor environments compared to outdoor in the residential and the city areas.

A significant relation between the outdoor traffic density and the indoor level of heavy metals was found.

Finally, a higher levels of PAHs and heavy metals were found in the city center area compared with the residential area in Qasabat al-Karak.
