English Abstract

This thesis deals with the process of electron emission from a surface of metals into the vacuum due to an intense applied electric field.

This process–usually called cold field electron emission (CFE)–is technically important due to its large number of applications, such as electron sources for microscopes, field emission displays and others.

The research work within the thesis addresses the advanced analysis of the emission behavior of various tip shapes.

For this purpose, a number of tungsten tips with different apex radii have been prepared.

These tips were mounted in a standard Field Emission Microscope (FEM) and various field electron emission characteristics have been measured under ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions.

The measurements recorded in this investigation include the I–V characteristics presented as Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plots, optical images, scanning electron micrographs, transmission electron micrographs and spatial current distributions (electron emission images).

Under this regime, the effects of thermal treatment (baking process) on the emitters was investigated.
