Metonymy in names of Judgment Day

Abstract EN

Metonymy is the rhetorical strategy of describing something indirectly by referring to things around it.

It is a figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated.

The present research tries to give an account of this concept as its definitions, characteristics, origins, and patterns are concerned.

It aims at applying metonymy to the names of Judgment Day.

This is so because of the great varieties used to describe the nature of that day by giving different names referring to the same day with different denotations.

The research consists of a theoretical and practical analysis .The texts are chosen from the Glorious Quran, the ayahs contain one name for Judgment Day.

The analysis adopted gives an account of that name and its uses.
