English Abstract

Evaluation of street dust pollution of Al-Mafraq city was evaluated for six heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Zn, Pb, Ni and Cd) for three sites within Al-Mafraq Governorate – Jordan representing different anthropogenic activities in two different seasons (summer and winter seasons), using tree bark and street dust for the year 2012.

The sites were City center represent areas with high traffic density, residential area with low traffic density and industrial area where small scale handcraft activities take place. Variation of heavy metal concentrations in the collected samples were evaluated where the source and degree of pollution was discussed for different sampling locations as well for different seasons. Generally, results indicate that the metal pollutants in street dusts and tree bark could be used as atmospheric pollution indicator, as it showed wide variations in the heavy metal concentration varying from high concentration during summer and low concentrations during winter season, which was attributed to wash effect of rain during winter seasons. Manganese was the most available and labile element followed by Copper from the place of low activity, which is (residential area) to the place of high activity (City center), as these elements originates from traffic emission.

The correlation between different heavy metals revealed no simple linear relationships between the concentrations of six heavy metals in the street dust and tree bark, at the three different locations.

al-though some distinct trends were observed.
