English Abstract

The aim of this study is to measure the natural radioactivity concentrations in medicinal plant samples taken from local herbal shop (46 samples) that’s are used in Jordan, but obtained from various countries.

In addition, the essential, non essential and heavy metals concentrations in these samples were detected. The first part aimed to the determination of natural radioactivity concentration in medicinal plants samples using High Purity Germanium detector (HPGe). The result obtained shown that the higher concentration of Radium-226, Radium-228 and Potassium-40 in medicinal plant samples were (15.6 ± 0.46, 15.33 ± 0.1, 2034 ± 57) Bq.kg-1dry, respectively.

And minimum concentration of Radium-226, Radium-228 and Potassium-40 in medicinal plant samples were (0.26 ± 0.05, 1.47 ± 0.5, 24 ±1.6) Bq.kg-1dry. The second part describes method for determination of 18 elements in medicinal plant samples collected, by using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS).

These elements were including: Uranium, Thorium, essential, non-essential and toxic metals. The level of radionuclides determined in this study presented the same order of magnitude or slightly different concentration than that used for comparison.

The results obtained also provide an useful information to carry out a dose assessment due to ingestion of medicinal plants, While, Medicinal plants are a rich source of minor constituents, such as Mg, Al, along with Fe, Mn and Ni, in trace amounts.
