English Abstract

The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system becomes very popular and more attractive to study the possibility of replacing the conventional power transmission systems with HVDC transmission system.

This work is focusing on the modeling and analysis of a Current Source Converter (CSC) as Line commutated HVDC system and Voltage Source Converter (VSC) as Self Commutated HVDC system.

Three test systems are considered and implemented using MATLAB (version 7.14.0.739 R2012a).

The ^rst and second systems are a test system for a CSC-HVDC and VSC-HVDC respectively, while the third system is an implementation of the HVDC transmission system for the Iraqi super grid (400 KV) electrical network.

All these systems are subjected to different fault conditions to verify the steady-state and transient behavior.

The total harmonic distortion (THD) is measured for different cases to provide a clear understanding about the most important components of the proposed system.

For the Iraqi super grid, a transmission line is suggested and the power flow for that line is calculated.

Thevenin equivalent impedance for each bus is calculated in order to give an appropriate representation of both buses at the ends of the transmission line under study.

From the results obtained, the system performance under steady state and transient conditions becomes more stable and reliable in case of using VSC instead of CSC as a core of HVDC.

The proposed control system (vector control) proved to have a very fast and stable satisfactory response to these fault conditions as compared to that used with the CSC-HVDC transmission system.

The results obtained for the Iraqi (400 KV) electrical network gave acceptable results to that which are shown and verify in the tested system.
