English Abstract

Water scarcity is a pressing global issue.

Greywater reclamation is a viable option to reduce fi*eshwater demand.

The basic objective of this work is toevaluate the performance of the proposed greywater treatments system.

The proposed system is Multi Mixed Media Radial Flow Bioreactor (MMRBF) with preozonation as a pretreatment step.

The inner bioreactor filled with sand- porcelinaite mixture with volume percentage (1:1), and dio =0.2288 and Cu= 3.846, while the outer bioreactor filled with char coal - rice husk mixture with volume percentage (1:1) and (d10 = 0.241 and UC = 24.056).

This reactor was designed and constructed in the environmental hydraulic laboratory in al Mustansiriya University-College of Engineering of two coaxial PVR reactors of 1700 mm height.

The selected reactors consist of coaxial pipe, the inner of 150 mm diameter with uniform holes along, and the outer pipe of 300 mm, diffusing plate and collecting basin was allocated above the reactor to modify the aeration rate.

Measurement of DO, head loss, BOD5, COD, TSS, pH, Ammonia-Nitrogen, Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorous, Boron (B), Alkalinity (CaCO3), TDS, SO-^4, EC, K,Na+1,Ca+^, Mg^, SAR, Cl,PO^, Total Fecal Coliforms for influent and effluent greywater were carried out during a period extended from October 2011 to July 2012.

Five piezometers were used to measure water head pressure across the bioreactor;the water surface level above the filter surface of the filter was controlled to 250 mm height over the filter surface by oversow port.

Twelve sets of tests and samples were taken , the total removal efficiency for of BOD5, COD and TSS were (87.4%, 79% and 90%) respectively, and the mean results of ^^BF for process (influent, after preozonation, and after filtration) were BOD5 (174- 96.5- 21mg\l ), COD ( 278- 202- 57 mg\l ), TSS (125 - 77.25 - 8.83 mg\l), Total Fecal Coliforms (1.7x105 - 3x104- 7.6x103cfu/100mL), pH are (8.2, 7.9 and 6.9), ^H4+-N (23.4, 17.8, 10.9mg\l),T-N (31.9, 21.5, 13.9mg\l), T-P (16.6, 10.6, 10.7mg\l)respectively.

Four set of experiments were achieved to study the effect of Boron, Alkalinity (CaCO3),TDS, SO-24, EC, SAR, Cl-.

The mean result were for influent- after preaeration with ozone and after MMRBF for Boron (1.57 - 1.46 - 0.63 mg\l), Alkalinity (CaCOs) (316 - 323 - 199 mg\l), TDS (1072 - 1057 - 623 mg\l), SO4 (198 - 175 - 135 mg\l), EC (2.47 - 2.22 - 1.84 dS/m), SA^(48 - 50 - 19), Cl (mg/l) (206 - 99.5 - 145 mg\l).

Pilot plant designed and constructed to supply flowrateof 2.88m3/dayand the total head loss was 15.5 cm with filtration rate 7 m\hr.
