English Abstract

In this research ,the sediment load in Shat Al-Gharaf River , lies in the south of Iraq ,has been studied .It is designed river which serve wide area in the region.

The empirical equation for computing the sediment discharge in river have been discussed emphasing on four methods:( Bagnold ,Van Rijin, Bahjatand Abd -A^Rahman).

The application of these methods contains the selection of (13) sections along the river in order to measure the hydraulic parameters of the different location of reach in addition to the slope along the river .Samples of suspended and bed material sediment have been taken at each section using homemade Sampler.

The hydraulic parameters have been measured using (Acoustic Doppler Current Pro^le)ADCP device .

A new formula for estimating the suspended sediment load in Shat Al-Gharaf was developed, depending on the data of 10 sections in this river and by using SPSS program ,the determination coefficient of the new formula is (R2=0.94).

The validity of the established formula has been verified using some of field data over the world which selected from published literatures(Wiliam R.

Brownie ,1981 ) as follow: 1- Colorado river data of the U.S.B.R.(1958) 2- River data from Leopold (1969).

3- India canal data of Chaudry et.al.(1970).

As well as ,those observed in the remainingthree sections of present reach, the verification show a good agreement .

The results of the empirical methods and the new formula were compared with ^eld measurements using three statistical methods: 1- Percentage of error .

2- Mean normalized errors.

3- Discrepancy ratio .

The suggested formula gave results within (100%) percentage of error for(±20) and(13%) mean normalized error and (100%) discrepancy ratio for (0.75-1.25) .
