English Abstract

This research attempts to use the concept of centrifuging process to prepare the hollow FG cylinder of Al-TiO2 alloy.

For the purpose of preparing this kind of graded materials in this research, a vertical centrifugal casting machine was designed and manufactured locally.

The FG cylinders prepared have shown a reasonable graded hardness value across the thickness.

It’s a material of heterogeneous microstructure in which a high volume fraction of TiO2 hard particles is clustered along the surface according to the value of pouring temperature and centrifugal force that represented by the rotations number of mold per minutes.

It was found that the use of pouring temperature of 850˚C and the rotation speed of 2000 r.p.m (without slipping) would give the graded hardness valuesespecially when TiO2 wt% is 10%.

It is also found that the clustering of TiO2 weakens the tensile strength but leads to increasing the resistance of wear.

In this research, there is also a simulation of FG cylinders by ANSYS program.

Simulation results have shown that the radial stresses are highest at the surface as a result of increased concentration of the TiO2 on the surface.

Simulation results also have proved that gradually regular temperature distributions are observed when the cylinder exposed to an outside temperature of 500˚C and an internal pressure of 40 MPa.

Results of X-ray diffraction analysis for cylinders prepared with the pouring temperature conditions 850˚C and rotation speed of 2000 r.p.m (without slipping) proved that a (TiAl) crystalline phase is developed in all samples, with the noticeable maximum intensity in (7.5 wt% of TiO2) FG cylinders.
