English Abstract

The HVDC transmission system becomes very popular in field of electric power transmission.

Therefore, researchers have dedicated their efforts to study the possibility of replacing the conventional power transmission systems with HVDC transmission system.

This work presents modeling and analysis of a VSC based HVDC transmission system.

A converter of a three level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) voltage source converter has been chosen for the system modeling.

The system simulation results were implemented using (MATLAB version 7.1) package.

Two systems are studied in this work; the first is a test system used to verify the simulation results, and the second system is an implementation of the HVDC transmission system for the Iraqi super grid.

Different fault cases were subjected for both systems and the system dynamics is tested by simulating different steady-state and transient cases such as step changes on the active and reactive power references and balanced and unbalanced faults.

Also, the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is measured for different cases to provide a clear understanding of system components importance.

For the Iraqi super grid, a transmission line is chosen and the power flow for this line is calculated by simulating a load flow for the grid.

The thevenin equivalent impedance for each bus is calculated in order to give an appropriate representation of both buses at the ends of the transmission line chosen.

The control system is a vector current control type with a sinusoidal pulse width modulation pattern to generate pulses to the converter.

From the results obtained, the control system proved to have fast and stable satisfactory response.

The results obtained for the Iraqi super grid proves that, the proposed HVDC transmission system can be implemented.
