English Abstract

An important criterion in power system operation is to meet the power demand at a minimum fuel cost using an optimal mix of different power plants.

Moreover, in order to supply electric power to customers in a secured and economic manner, thermal unit commitment is considered to be one of the best available options.

It is thus recognized as the optimal unit commitment of thermal systems that results in a great saving for electric utilities.

Unit Commitment is the problem of determining the ON/OFF schedule of generating units subject to unit capacity and operating constraints.

The formulation of unit commitment is discussed and the solution is obtained by modified dynamic programming and artificial neural network algorithm which have been developed to solve the unit commitment problem.

Three programs were built, these are the economic dispatch program, the unit commitment program using the modified dynamic programming approach, and the unit commitment program using the Neural Network approach.

All programs were written in MATLAB language.

The effectiveness of these programs has been tested on two systems comprising four units and ten units and results were compared for total operating cost with those of published papers.

The same programs are then appliedon the Iraqi power grid (400 kV) to obtain the unit commitment scheduling.
