English Abstract

This thesis focuses on studying the assembly line balancing problem, which is one of the problems in production lines.

The multi-model line was studied in details.

Features and characteristics of this type are explained, as it is designed to produce more than one model of one product or several products on the same line in batches.

This requires the creation and preparation between one batch and the other for each product, and shows the problem is obvious in heavy and complicated products.

Our study of this kind of problem has determined the levels of similarity and difference in the technological routes between one product and another.

These levels have an impact on the time of the configuration between the batches and therefore the levels of similarity and difference are divided into three levels, first level does not have a difference in the technological route, but the difference is in the times of tasks, in the second level there are some similarities in the technological route; in the third level the differences are high.

To solve the problem of multi-model an approach has been proposed and the stages to solve the problem are; the first stage is to finding the best sequence for products based on total minimum setup time or total minimum setup costs to transform from one product to another product and the second stage divides the problem into sub-problems and balancing of each sub-problem separately as a single-model.

The software (Production and Operations Management - Quantitative Method) is used, where a ranked positional weights rule is applied and then the overall efficiency of the multi-model line has been calculated.

The study has been applied in an actual production environment in Al – Fida’a Company which is one of public sectors companies of Iraq Ministry of Industry and Minerals.

The product (caravans) has been selected as a case of the situation presented above.

Four models of caravans with different sizes have been chosen, and the proposed approach is applied to solve the multi-model problem.

The balancing of the problem is made for each sub-problem separately and finding the efficiency of multi-model line is reached to 78.8% and the required working days to complete all quantity are equal to 1028 day.

The solution is improved to decrease the required working days and increases the efficiency of the multi-model line by splitting the critical tasks into two tasks for caravan (9*3 and 12*4).

The efficiency after improving is reach to 82% and the required working days is reduced to 612 day.
