English Abstract

This investigation aims to study the effect of pozzolanic material ( nano metakaolin NMK and metakaolin MK ) on some properties (compressive trength ,splitting tensile strength ,water absorption ,density ,static modulus of elasticity and scanning electron microscope SEM ) of concrete.

Nanotechnology is a very active research field and has applications in a number of areas.

Currently this technology is used for the creation of new materials.

During this study three concrete mixtures are used to produce different level of compressive strength .The design compressive strength of the adopted mixes are ( 45, 65,& 75 MPa) .

The NMK content as a percentage of cement replacement by weight are (3, 5, &10 %) , while the MK percentage of weight replacement is 10% only .

The results of compressive strength show that the compressive strength of concrete with the NMK and concrete with MK has been higher than reference concrete with the same W/c ratio and also the same trend is observed for the splitting tensile strength .The improvement in the compressive strength when using 10% MK has been (38.3 ,14.77 ,& 8.1% ) at 28 days for ( C45 ,C65 , &C75 ) respectively .

While using 10% NMK replacement the percent increase on compressive strength , has been (63.1% ,28.14 %& ,16.51%) for (C45 ,C65 ,&C75) respectively .

The improvement in the splitting tensile strength has been ( 34.3% ,30% , & 28.5%) at 28 days for mixes (C45 ,C65 ,&C75) respectively when using 10% NMK .

When using 10 % MK the percentage increase has been (21.8, 7.5, & 16.6% ) for mixes (C45, C65, &C75) respectively at age 28 days.

The MK & NMK improve the static modulus of elasticity ( Ec ) significantly .The ( Ec ) at age 28 days for reference was ( 28.5 GPa ), it has become (40.31& 41.12 GPa) for mix (C45 ) when the replacement of NMK was (5 & 10 % ) respectively .

The same trend is almost observed for other concrete mixes .

The test results show that the density is increased with the increase of NMK replacement and also the test results of water absorption show significant improvement .

The SEM figures at age 120 of days show that the microstructure of concrete mixes are improved when addition pozzolanic materials ( MK and NMK)
