English Abstract
The as received multiwalled carbon nanotubes were first functionalized using two steps functionalization process.
In the first step MWCNTs were sonicated in a mixed solution of concentrated (HNO3 +H2SO4)(1:3 volume ratio) at room temperature for 30 min.
The second step involved sonication in H2O2 (30%) at room temperature for 30 min.
The functionalized MWCNTs are named (FMWCNTs).
The functionalized MWCNTs are sensitized in Sn+2 ions solution and activated by Pd+2 ions solution then coated using electroless copper plating method.
The copper coated MWCNTs are named (CMWCNTs).
Cylindrical samples of copper matrix nanocomposite were used.
Three different groups of samples with (0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 3 wt% MWCNTs) were prepared by means of powder technology.
The first group contains multiwalled carbon nanotubes as received (Cu/MWCNTs), second group contains functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Cu/FMWCNTs) while the third group contains coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Cu/CMWCNTs).
The results showed that MWCNTs can remarkably improve the mechanical properties (hardness and wear resistance) for copper metal.
The best results achieved at Cu/2 wt% CMWCNTs nanocomposites which are about 2.7 times higher in hardness and 3.5 times higher in wear resistance than that for pure copper metal.
The enhancement of mechanical properties is due to the effect of homogeneous distribution of MWCNTs in Cu matrix and good adhesion between MWCNTs and the matrix.
FTIR, XRD and SEM were used to characterize copper/multiwalled carbon nanotubes nanocomposites.
