English Abstract
In this work, two distinct approaches have been investigated.
The first is use electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on 316L stainless steel and the second approach is to close the open porosity of air plasma sprayed (APS) yttria partially stabilized zirconia (YPSZ) by EPD.
A nanosized powder of 5 wt% YPSZ in aqueous solution has been used at different pH, voltage and deposition time to produce EPD on metal substrate and plasma sprayed layer.
Microstructural studies of plan view upper surface and transverse section EPD have been done using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to evaluate the layer thickness, topography, phases, roughness and defects.
The EPD protective overlay has a uniform and easily controllable thickness, uniformly distributed closed porosity and cracks protecting the APS YPSZ TBCs.
YSZ in aqueous solution of water and ethanol was used for EPD processes.
The suspension stability of YPSZ/ethanol and H2O can be achieved.
Increases in deposition rate with increasing voltage are independent of solid loading (iodine).
EPD on s.steel and on plasma sprayed sample were then sintered ander vacuum at 700,800,900oC.
Microstructures of sintered deposits show the density was increased.
The results show that the thickness and morphology of the deposited layers can be well controlled by proper selection of deposition parameters.
