English Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of developing mathematical communication skills on enhancing the mathematical thinking and mathematics achievement of tenth grade students_This study tried to give answers to the following questions : 1.

What is the effect of developing mathematical communication skills on enhancing the mathematical thinking of tenth grade students? 2.

What is the effect of developing mathematical communication skills on the mathematics achievement of tenth grade students? To achieve this purpose a study sample of (76) students was selected from the tenth grade from "Hay Al-Olaymat Secondary School for Girls" in Mafraq .

This sample was divided into two groups of (38) student each.

One group was randomly chosen to be the experimental group , the other was the control group.

The two groups were found to be identical in achievement and mathematical thinking prior to the treatment.

The means and standard deviations on the pre -test results were very close.

In addition t- test for independent samples (_ =0.05) was used and no significant difference between the tow groups was found in the results of those tow test (achievement and mathematical thinking).

One unit, (Analytical geometry), from mathematics textbook for tenth grade for the scholastic year 2010/2011 was used as the learning material for the study.

Experimental group was taught the material by developing mathematical communication skills, while the control group was taught the same material using the traditional approach.

Two instruments were used in the study; a mathematical achievement test and a mathematical thinking test which contained six major categories that covered the following characteristics of mathematical thinking: induction, deduction, mathematical proof, logical thinking (formal logic), reasoning and rationalization and word problem solving.

Data analysis procedures using appropriate (t- test) for independent samples revealed that: 1.

There was a significant difference (_ =0.05) between experimental and control group means on post-test mathematical thinking results in favor of the experimental group.

2.

There was a significant difference (_ =0.05) between experimental and control group means on post- test mathematics achievement results in favor of the experimental group.

The previous results showed a positive effect of developing mathematical communication skills on enhancing the mathematical thinking and mathematics achievement of tenth grade students.
