English Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of technology-based instruction on the reading skill and attitudes towards English as a foreign language.
It attempted to answer the following questions: 1.
What is the effect of using technology-based instruction on the Saudi university students' reading skill? 2.
What is the effect of technology-based instruction on the Saudi university students' attitudes towards English as a foreign language? To answer the questions of the study, the researcher used a quasi-experimental design.
Two groups were chosen purposefully.
The total number was (50) level (1) students majoring in English language at Northern Border University in Arar during the first semester of the academic year 2008\2009 .The students were divided into two groups.
The first group was assigned randomly to be the experimental group who studied reading according the technology-based instruction.
The second group studied according to the conventional way.
To check the equivalence between the two groups, the researcher used the students’ scores on (GSE) General Secondary Examination. The two instruments were used in this study, namely, the reading achievement test and attitude questionnaire.
To establish the validity of the test and the questionnaire, content validity, face and logic validity were used .The test and the questionnaire were given to a jury of thirteen specialists.
The reliability of the reading test was computed according to (KR-20) Formula.
It was found to be (0.83).The reliability of the attitude questionnaire was computed using Cronbach’s Alpha Formula.
It was found to be (0.85).
By the end of the experiment, the researcher administered the post reading test and the attitudinal scale towards English language as a posttest for both groups.
For the purpose of data analysis, the researcher used a t-test to detect any significant differences between the two groups on the reading posttest and attitudes questionnaire.
The result revealed that the reading achievement of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group.
In addition, there were significant differences in the attitudes towards English language, in favor of the experimental group.
Based on the results of the present study, the researcher recommended that the technology-based instruction should be used in teaching EFL .The study also made some recommendations and suggestions for future research.
