English Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating the content of "Action Pack" Textbook Series for the Jordanian tenth grade students in light of the lifelong learning and the basic academic competencies and investigating the Jordanian English language teachers' views concerning it.

This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- To what extent are the lifelong learning competencies included in the Action Pack textbook of the tenth grade in Jordan? 2- To what extent are the basic academic competencies included in the Action Pack textbook of the tenth grade in Jordan? 3- What are the Jordanian English language teachers’ views of the tenth grade about the lifelong learning (LL) and the basic academic competencies (BAC) in the Action Pack tenth grade textbook? 4- Is there any consistency between the Jordanian English language teachers’ views and the content analysis of the Action Pack tenth grade textbook with regard to the lifelong learning and the basic academic competencies? The population of the study consisted of (65) Jordanian English language teachers at (30) schools in the First Directorate of Education / Amman.

The researcher analyzed and evaluated the student's textbook, the activity book and the teacher's guide by developing a content analysis checklist based on six domains including 57 items with a three-point Likert scale to show how the lifelong learning and the basic academic competencies are fairly available, distributed and balanced in the " Action Pack " for the tenth grade, making use of the national & international studies i.e.

Al-Madanat (2008), Ababneh (2007), Karsou (2005) and Shatnawi (2003).

Moreover, the researcher developed a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale based on six domains including 57 items concerning lifelong learning and basic academic competencies to investigate the English language teachers' views about the content of " Action Pack " for the tenth grade, making use of the national & international studies i.e.

Al-Madanat (2008), Ababneh (2007), Karsou (2005) and Shatnawi (2003).

\Statistical analyses such as means, standard deviations, percentages and frequencies were used in the study.

The findings of the study showed that the lifelong learning competencies (thinking and learning) were not fairly available in the tenth grade units of the "Action Pack" textbook series.

Also, the findings of the study showed that the basic academic competencies ( listening, speaking, reading and writing ) were not fairly available in the tenth grade units of "Action Pack" textbook series, except the reading competency.

In addition, the findings of the study indicated that the correlation coefficient of consistency between the teachers' views responses and the content analysis checklist was high concerning these three domains (thinking, reading and learning) while the correlation coefficient of consistency was low between the teachers' views responses and the content analysis checklist of the other three domains (speaking, writing and listening).

Finally, some findings of the study might be attributed to some limitations such as the population of this study, the sample of this study, the study instruments and the researcher's evaluation of the content of "Action Pack" textbook series for grade ten.
