English Abstract

This study has investigated the congruence between the Jordanian English Teachers’ belief system about English instruction and their classroom practices.

As there were no reliable and validated questionnaire and observation checklist, the researcher herself designed those instruments besides conducting an open interview with teachers for the purpose of establishing this study. The Population of the study consisted of all the teachers of English who teach the tenth and the eleventh grades in the secondary schools which belong to Irbid First Directorate of Education for the academic year 2005/2006.

They were 128 (68 male and 60 female) teachers.

Two samples were selected to participate in the study; the first one consisted of all the population who responded to the questionnaire, while the second one consisted of 26 male teachers and 25 female teachers with a total of 51 teachers of different levels of experience.

The study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- What are the common beliefs about English instruction among the teachers of the secondary schools in Irbid First Directorate of Education? 2- What are the classroom practices prevailing among the English teachers of the secondary schools in Irbid first Directorate of Education? 3- Is there congruence between the English teachers' belief system about English instruction and their classroom practices? 4- Are there any correlations in the congruence between the teachers' belief system about English instruction and their classroom practices due to their sex? 5- Are there any correlations in the congruence between teachers' belief system about English instruction and their classroom practices due to their experience? Despite the teachers’ ability to demonstrate a little congruence between their beliefs and their classroom practices while teaching the skills of reading, vocabulary, and the structures and the functions of the language, the general findings of the study revealed that there was no congruence between the English teachers’ belief system about English instruction and their classroom practices.

The findings of the study also revealed that neither the teachers' sex nor their experience had any effect upon the congruence between their beliefs about English instruction and their classroom practices.
