English Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a proposed program based on communicative classroom activities on developing upper basic stage students' oral proficiency in Tulkarm Directorate of Education in Palestine. The sample of the study consisted of fifty-six female students divided into two sections.

These sections were selected randomly.

One section was assigned to the experimental group, while the other section was assigned to the control group. This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

Are there any significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group in the tenth grade students' oral proficiency due to the program based on communicative classroom activities? 2.

Are there any significant differences between the mean scores in the oral proficiency components (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension) used to develop the tenth grade students' oral proficiency due to the program based on communicative classroom activities? To answer the questions of the study, the researcher proposed a program based on speaking communicative activities and developed an oral interview test.

Then, he obtained the required validity and reliability of the study instruments. To guarantee the equivalence and homogeneity of the two groups, the researcher administered a speaking pretest and evaluated the students' ability in speaking.

Then, the experimental group was taught according to the proposed program while the control group was taught according to the syllabus without any additional material.

By the end of the experiment, both groups were posttested. To describe and analyze the data, the researcher used the means, the standard deviation and an independent T- test.

The findings of the study indicated significant differences in favor of the experimental group, which was taught according to the proposed activity program, in terms of the following variables: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

These significant differences were greater in grammar, comprehension and fluency than in pronunciation and vocabulary.

In the light of these findings, the researcher suggested the following recommendations: 1.

Increasing the number of the English language periods to five or six periods a week instead of four. 2.

Including more diverse communicative activities to be practiced in class for a reasonable amount of time. 3.

Providing a suitable arrangement that helps students to sit in small groups or pairs for more interaction.
