English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of an instructional software program of English language functions on Tenth Graders’ achievement. The study attempted to answer the following three questions: 1- Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of Tenth Graders’ in the experimental and control groups attributed to the effect of using an instructional software program of English language functions? 2- Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of Tenth Graders in the experimental and control groups attributed to the sex variable? 3- Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of the Tenth Graders in the experimental and control groups attributed to the interaction between the method of instruction and their sex? The subjects of this study consisted of all the Tenth Grade students in Tafila Directorate of Education with a total number of 1815 male and female students for the academic year 2003/2004. The sample of the study was selected randomly from the subjects of the study in two secondary schools: Al-Amir Hassan Secondary School for Boys and Zein-Alshraf Secondary School for Girls.

Both of the two schools are located in Qasabat Al-Tafilah. The sample was distributed into four groups, two groups assigned for the experiment and two groups assigned for the control group.

The total number of the sample was 118: 60 males and 58 females, 59 were assigned to the experimental group (30 males and 29 females) and 59 for the control groups (30 males and 29 females). The instruments of the study were an instructional software program of English language functions and an achievement test.

Both of them were prepared by the researcher for the purpose of this study.

They were validated by a team of specialists consisted of teachers, supervisors, and PhD holders specialized in TEFL and computer science. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was employed to find the effect of the software program on Tenth Graders’ achievement in the English language achievement test. The findings of this study were the following: 1- There were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group who studied the English language functions through CAI lessons and the mean scores of the control group who studied the English language functions following the traditional method of instruction.

The significant differences were in favor of the CAI students.

2- There were statistically significant differences between the means of the experimental group and the means of the control group attributed to the sex variable.

The significant differences were in favor of females over males. 3- There were no statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of Tenth Graders in the experimental and control groups attributed to the interaction between the method of instruction and sex. In light of the findings of this study, the researcher recommended and encouraged the EFL teachers to use CAI lessons in their instruction.
