English Abstract

This study aimed to develop a program based on the communicative approach and evaluate its effect on the experimental group in contrast to the control group students who were taught via the conventional approach.

In brief, the study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

What are the methods of teaching English 102 currently used at some colleges of the Balqa Applied University, and how effective are the methods currently used for teaching English 102 in developing students’ communicative skills? 2.

How effective is a program based on the communicative approach in developing students’ communicative skills? In order to answer these questions, three instruments were developed and used namely : a questionnaire, an observation checklist and a communicative test.

The communicative test was developed to measure the effectiveness of the communicative program..

Before commencing the study, this test draft was given to three fellow teachers of English to judge its validity.

Moreover, pretest scores of the two groups were compared and T-test was used to ensure the equivalence of the groups.

The second instrument was the questionnaire which was filled out by the teachers of English 102 on their instructional practices and their students’ in the classrooms.

The third instrument, the observation checklist was used so that the researcher could record his observation on the students’ learning and teachers’ practices.

The researcher developed a communicative program by adapting some activities and eliminating some components so that the redesigned units could fulfill the requirements of the communicative approach.

The sample of the study consisted of two sub samples: forty-two undergraduate students who where enrolled in English 102 at Princess Rahmeh University College, Balqa Applied University, and they were distributed into experimental and control groups; and eighteen teachers who filled out the questionare.

The experimental group was taught through the use of the ‘communicative’ program and the control group was taught via the ‘conventional’ program for a period of four weeks .

Students were tested before and after the study.

The two tests were corrected by three scorers and their means were calculated and compared.

Results of the study revealed that the present methods of teaching were, for the main part, conventional and not communicative.

Most teachers rely heavily on grammar and explanation of rules at the expense of interactive and conversational activities.

This may be responsible for our students’ deficiencies in the communicative skills.

Results also showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the two groups as indicated by their mean scores.

The findings of the study indicated the usefulness of the communicative approach over the conventional approach.

Results also revealed that the methods of teaching used are generally conventional and not communicative.

In light of the findings of the study, EFL teachers are recommended to use the techniques and procedures which enhance and upgrade the communicative skills.

Teaching staffs are also recommended to use innovative techniques and procedures which can improve the current teaching practices and possibly their outcomes.
