English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the influence of two testing/assessment methods on Jordanian EFL students’ reading comprehension.

More specifically, it attempted to answer the following questions : 1.

What was the relationship of students' language proficiency in English ( LPE ) to reading comprehension in English as a foreign language ( EFL ) when immediate written recall protocol ( IWRP ) and multiple choice ( MC ) were used as assessment methods ? 2.

What was the relationship of students’ language proficiency in Arabic ( LPA ) to reading comprehension in English as a foreign language when IWRP and MC were used as assessment methods ? 3.

What was the effect of the type of the testing (TT ) method on the students’ reading comprehension in EFL when they were tested by IWRP and MC ? 4.

What was the effect of the language of the test ( LT ) on the students’ reading comprehension in EFL when they were tested/ assessed by IWRP and MC ? The sample of the study consisted of 287 eleventh-grade school students chosen randomly in the city of Irbid in Jordan.

Two types of assessing reading comprehension were used in the study , namely , immediate written recall protocol ( IWRP ) and multiple choice ( MC ) .

Two authentic English texts were used to assess students’ reading comprehension .

Approximately , half of the students ( n = 140 ) were tested in reading comprehension by IWRP , and the other half ( n = 147 ) were tested by MC .

One half of each group were asked to respond in their native language ( Arabic ) and the other half were asked to respond in the target language ( English ) .

Students’ school grade-records in L1 and L2 were considered their language proficiency in Arabic and English .

The relationship among the variables were determined through correlations , t-test , and two-way ANOVA .

The main findings of the study were as follows : 1.

Language proficiency in English was a significant predictor of L2 reading comprehension .

2.

Language proficiency in Arabic was a significant predictor of L2 reading comprehension when IWRP and MC were used as testing types in the English version only . 3.

The type of the testing method has a main effect on reading comprehension when MC is used as a testing method . 4.

The language of the testing method has a significant effect on reading comprehension in favor of Arabic .

The results of the study provide relevant information for the development of reading assessment instruments by defining which types/tasks adequately and accurately measure the reading comprehension ability .

The study calls for the use of multiple-assessment methods in EFL reading comprehension .

The IWRP is recommended as a valid assessment instrument for classroom application .

Implications and recommendations for further research are drawn and presented .
