English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of using computers in English Communication Skills' courses, English (1) and English (2) on Al al Bayt University students’ literacy skills, perceived academic self-efficacy and attitudes towards Language learning.

Here, computers are meant to be a tool just like the chalkboards and tape recorders in class, they are meant to be like any other equipment that facilitates the process of learning.

The sample of the study was purposefully chosen from Al al-Bayt University because it was the first public Jordanian university that teaches English communication skills via computers.

In addition, the researcher is an instructor at the Language Centre in the university. The researcher aimed at answering the following questions: 1- Are there any statistically significant differences in the literacy skills (reading and writing) performance of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? 2- Are there any statistically significant differences in the perceived academic self- efficacy of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? 3- Are there any statistically significant differences in the attitudes of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities towards language learning that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? The researcher has used three tools in this study: an achievement test, a questionnaire for self- efficacy and a questionnaire for the attitudes of students towards English language learning.

These tools were designed by the researcher herself. The researcher has supervised the application of the three study tools on the pre-test and post-test of achievement, self- efficacy and attitudes towards learning the English language. The findings of the study revealed the following: 1.

There are statistically significant differences in the literacy skills (reading and writing) performance of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? 2.

There are statistically significant differences in the perceived academic self- efficacy of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? 3.

There are statistically significant differences in the attitudes of First-Year students at Jordanian public universities towards language learning that can be attributed to the teaching method (computer-oriented)? In light of the findings of this study, the researcher put forward a number of recommendations to be taken into consideration by the English language teachers, the material producers and the curriculum designers.
