English Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of using explicit and implicit techniques on developing active and passive English vocabulary among Jordanian Secondary Information Technology Students. This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- Is there any difference between the pre and post mean scores of active and passive English vocabulary due to the use of explicit technique? 2- Is there any difference between the pre and post mean scores of active and passive English vocabulary due to the use of implicit technique? 3- Is there any difference between the pre and post mean scores of active and passive English vocabulary due to the use of the conventional technique? The population of the study consisted of the First Secondary Information Technology Students at Aqaba Directorate of Education in the First semester of the academic year 2006-2007.
One instrument was used in this study, it was a vocabulary test.
The participants of the study consisted of three sections at Aqaba Secondary School for Girls.
There were 75 students chosen purposively.
They were distributed on two experimental groups and one control group.
Before carrying out the experiment, a pre-test for vocabulary was administered to the students in order to measure their actual level of vocabulary by counting mean scores and standard deviation of the three groups.
Afterwards, one of the experimental groups was taught by the explicit technique, the other was taught by the implicit technique, while the control group was taught by the conventional way.
By the end of the experiment, the researcher administered the vocabulary achievement post-test to the three groups. The findings of the study indicated significant differences among students' mean scores due to the explicit and implicit techniques.
The two experimental groups outperformed the control group in vocabulary development.
Based on the results of the present study, it was recommended to encourage teachers to adopt explicit and implicit techniques while teaching for the effectiveness of those techniques in improving students' vocabulary development.
