This study was conducted to investigate the effect of using the inquiry-based, cooperative and ordinary learning strategies on the reading comprehension of students taking general English 102 as a university prerequisite at King Abdulaziz University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah.

The study aimed at answering the following main question: Are there differences in the reading comprehension achievements due to the use of teaching strategies (inquiry-based, cooperative and the ordinary strategy)? The main question is divided into some specific questions as follows: 1.

Are there differences in the literal comprehension achievement due to the use of learning strategies (inquiry-based, cooperative and the ordinary strategy)? 2.

Are there differences in the inferential comprehension achievements due to the use of learning strategies (inquiry-based, cooperative and the ordinary strategy)? 3.

Are there differences in the synthetic comprehension achievement due to the use of learning strategies (inquiry-based, cooperative and the ordinary strategy)? 4.

Are there differences in the critical comprehension achievement due to the use of learning strategies (inquiry-based, cooperative and the ordinary strategy)? The study was conducted on a sample of 90 regular male students taking general English 102 at the English Language Center, King Abdulaziz University.

Three different learning strategies were used to teach the students.

This sample was divided into three groups, one of them was taught by using the inquiry-based and cooperative reading strategies, whereas the third was taught by using the ordinary strategies.

Five units were adopted from an Interactions Access Reading-Writing book taught at King Abdulaziz University, as a university pre-requisite for all students at the English Language Center.

The units selected were: (Sleep and Dreams), Volunteers, Eating Bugs, (Adventure and Vacations), The Greenhouse Effect and The Women of Guatemala.

The study article was a reading comprehension test of one hundred of multiple and essay questions; it was given to some experienced instructors.

Their comments and recommendations were observed.

Some questions were slightly modified such as adding and deleting some WH questions, the structures of the questions and levels of the questions.

The results indicated that students' reading comprehension by using the inquiry based and cooperative reading comprehension strategies were better than those who were taught by using the ordinary strategy.
