English Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a proposed EFL integrative program based on the Whole language approach and measuring its effect on the basic stage students' achievement in English and to evaluate the role the Whole language approach and the integrative method may play in developing the basic stage students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The population of the study consisted of (4658)male and female tenth grade students in the public schools of the First Directorate of Education in Irbid in the firt semeter, 2003/2004.

The sample of the study consisted of 247 male and female students divided into 4 male and 4 female sections.

Two male and two female sections were assigned to the experimental group while the other two male and female sections were assigned to the control group.

This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

Are there any differences in the achievement mean scores among the tenth grade students in the experimental group and the control group due to the proposed program? 2.

Are there any differences in the achievement mean scores among the tenth grade students in the experimental group due to gender? 3.

Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of the tenth grade students due to the interaction between the method of teaching and gender? 4.

Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of the tenth grade students in the experimental group in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) due to the proposed program? 5.

Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of the tenth grade students in the experimental group in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) due to gender? 6.

Are there any statistically significant differences in the achievement mean scores of the tenth grade students in the experimental group in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) due to the interaction between the method and gender? To answer the questions of the study, the researcher developed a teaching program and a post-test.

Then he established the required validity and reliability of the instruments.

To guarantee the equivalence of the groups, the researcher administered an English language achievement pre-test.

Afterwards, the experimental group was taught according to the Whole Language Approach and the Integrative Method while the control group was taught according to the traditional way.

By the end of the experiment, the different groups (experimental and control) sat for the English language achievement posttest.

To analyze the data gathered, the researcher used means and standard deviations, One-Way ANCOVA and Two-Way MANCOVA.

The findings of the study revealed significant differences in favor of the experimental group taught according to the proposed teaching program.

The findings also indicated significant differences between the mean scores of male and female students in favor of female students.

The findings also showed a ranking interaction between the method of teaching and gender.
