English Abstract

The primary aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of designing instructional reading software to develop English reading comprehension and speed.

The study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.

Is there a significant effect on the sample’s reading speed that could be attributed to the instructional reading software? 2.

Is there a significant effect on the sample’s reading comprehension that could be attributed to the instructional reading software? The sample of the study was chosen purposefully.

They were 199 university students, graduates and undergraduates, from New York Institute of Technology.

It consisted of the experimental group which was (99), whereas the control group was (100) students.

The instruments of the study were namely, a reading comprehension test (pre and post) which measures two dimensions: reading comprehension and the speed of reading word per minute(WPM).

Then a software program was created and designed by the researcher.

The Findings of the study revealed that the instructional reading program improved the sample’s main two reading skills significantly more than the conventional reading methods.

The study revealed that the reading software application did actually enhance the EFL students’ reading speed and comprehension as well as the capitalization rules application aspects which contributed to their rate increase of reading comprehension and speed level and improved the reading fixation width.

Considering the above findings, the researcher recommended that more research and language-technological applications might be investigated.

This study may also open the doors for more studies in the future to study the influence of the IRS on the Language output like writing skills development
