English Abstract

Migrants suffer from various health problems including psychological stress.

This study is the first to use the Community Oriented Primary Care methodology to address a health problem among Arab migrant women in Germany.

In partnership with the Muslim Women’s Educational Center, Cologne, we defined a community and identified an important health problem, studied psychological stress using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) instrument, and implemented and evaluated an intervention to reduce stress.

Almost 90% of participating women were psychologically stressed.

Higher stress scores were associated with older age, lower level of education, having more children, coming from a North African rather than Middle Eastern or European country, having lived in Germany for <15 years, having had a disease since migrating to Germany, being ill at the time of the study, and feeling negatively about being a migrant.

Our data suggest that stress management techniques, physical exercise and health education can reduce stress.
