Abstract EN

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses low coherence interferometry to form cross-sectional-images of the retina with axial resolution of 10 micrometers (urn) and lateral resolution of 20 urn.

Wifh high resolution, cross-sectional images of retinal structure, measurement of retinal thickness and reproducibility on sequential examinations, OCT provides clinically relevant, quantitative information regarding the retina and adjacent structure.

OCT is a good tool for monitoring persistent cystoid macular edema not visible by biomicroscopy.

OCT is as effective as defecting macular edema in uveitic patients.

It is superior in describing axial distribution of fluid.

Macular edema in uvetic patients takes the form of diffuse macular edema (DME) or cystoid macular edema (CME) with or without retinal detachment (R.D.) The presence of CME and R.D is likely to have adverse effects on visual acuity.

The OCT pattern of macular edema is helpful in making a diagnosis and in determining the prognosis of of ME.

It is also helpful in clarifying the pathogenesis of ME and optimizing the treatment
