Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The elegy is an art form used by poets to express sad emotions and lamentations for the deceased.
This kind of poetry could also involve in its content a judgment about the world of death and life.
As a matter of fact, however, this kind of poetry in the Othmani period had, in addition to its traditional aspects, many additional characteristics in its poetic form and content.
It dealt with issues such as policy, political crimes, internal revolutions and external conquests, the fall of cities and the overthrow of monarchies.
Socially, poetic elegies also expressed the setbacks and sufferings in society of that time having to do with the value of knowledge, the vital role of women and the condemning of corruption.
At the religious or doctrinal level, poetic elegies during the Othmani period expressed the sad feelings of people toward the natural disasters that were badly affecting Islamic sacred places.
They also condemned those who deviated from Islam and clarified the relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.
While literally such elegies appeared to express sadness, in reality they expressed a kind of enjoyment and entertainment.
From the literary point of view, this type of poetry reflected a change in the writing of the poems, which generally started with facts or ruins as a symbol.
They represent poetic history and a language that includes juxtapositions and implications.
The literary images of elegy poets include imaginative scenes between the poet and plants or images of illusions, which refer to the world of the hereafter.
Some elegy poets resorted to short and divided poetic forms and some to other musical elements, which contributed a great deal to explaining meanings.
These musical t ypes varied from quatrain poems to five and seven-line stanzas.
