Abstract EN

Bisphosphonates are the most widely prescribed medicines for the treatment of osteoporosis and have generally been regarded as well-tolerated and safe drugs.

Since 2005, there have been numerous case reports about atypical fractures of the femur linked to long-term treatment of osteoporosis with bisphosphonates.

Some attempts to characterize pathophysiology and epidemiology of these fractures have been published as well.

However, as the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) concluded in their task force report, the subject warrants further studies.
