The novel benzo[b]furan derivatives, 7a–i, were synthesized and characterized by Ugi four-component reaction between 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivative 1, a secondary amine 2, and an isocyanide 3 in water.

Those reactions were carried out at room temperature with moderate to good yields in one pot.
