There is no doubt that formalising information systems is of great value to a company.
This enables, among others, business processes, rules, services and objects models to be standardized, structured, capitalized and reused.
A formal information system involves a structured organization, clearly defined roles and responsibilities and therefore a rational management.
The Formal is thus more structuring, segmenting and may be associated with referential and standards.
However, generalizing a formalisation approach to all information system perspectives or all levels of granularity can inversely be fatal to the smooth running of the business, its management, and operation.
The aim of this paper is to explore information systems formal-informal continuum, to discover and understand its characteristics, patterns, anti-patterns, and the forces participating to its equilibrium.

Il est indéniable que la formalisation des systèmes d’information est d’une grande valeur ajoutée pour l’entreprise.
Cela permet, entre autres, d’uniformiser, de structurer, de capitaliser et de réutiliser les modèles des processus, des règles, des services et des objets métier de l’entreprise.
Un système d’information formel implique une organization structurée, des rôles et des responsabilités bien définis et par conséquent un management rationnel.
Le formel est ainsi plus structurant, segmentant et peut être associé à la notion de référentiel ou de norme.
Cependant, la généralisation d’une démarche de formalisation à toutes les perspectives ou à tous les niveaux de granularité d’un système d’information peut, contrairement aux attentes, s’avérer fatale à la bonne marche de l’entreprise, à son management, à sa communication, à l’interopérabilité et à la maintenabilité de ses applications.
L’objectif de ce papier est d’explorer le continuum formel-informel des systèmes d’information, de découvrir ses caractéristiques, ses patterns et anti-patterns et les forces participant à son équilibre.
