English Abstract

Vocabulary is considered the base for using the language in communication.

Therefore, the researcher examined students’ strategies to vocabulary learning and their relationship to success in vocabulary knowledge and language proficiency.

Three instruments were used: a questionnaire and two tests vocabulary knowledge and language proficiency test, which were prepared by the researcher for the purpose of the study.

The sample for the questionnaire consisted of 200 EFL female students for the upper basic stage (Eighth grade) in Balka’a Educational Directorate.

As for the vocabulary knowledge and language proficiency tests, a selected sample, 80 students from the sample of the questionnaire, was chosen.

The questionnaire was designed to know which strategies that students follow to learn vocabulary, While the two tests were designed to measure the depth of their vocabulary knowledge in addition to their language proficiency.

The results indicated that the students have a preference for dictionary strategies than the other strategies .

The findings also revealed that the two categories of strategies most often used were functional planning and centering vocabulary learning whereas the three categories of strategies least often used were seeking practice opportunities, language production and self-evaluation.

As for student knowledge of vocabulary and language proficiency , the results showed that there were no relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language proficiency is statistically significant at ( 0.01) .
