English Abstract

Speaking skill plays a major role in communication.

It is used to express one's ideas and thoughts and to convey intended messages simply and clearly.

So the researcher conducted this study to investigate speaking difficulties that encounter students in learning English at Upper Basic Stage.

The main question of this study is: What are the speaking difficulties that encounter students in learning English at the Upper Basic Stage in Jordan? This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- What are the Speaking Difficulties that Students Encounter in Learning English at the Upper Basic Stage in Jordan? 2- What are the main actual speaking difficulties that students of Tenth Grade encounter in learning English in Jordan? 3- What are the causes of the difficulties encountered by the students while learning speaking in Tenth Grade from the teachers' perspective? 4- What suggestions can be offered to overcome the difficulties of the speaking skill that students of Tenth Grade encounter? The participants of the study were all tenth Grade female teachers at Amman Third Directorate who took the questionnaires in addition to sixty female students who were selected randomly from Al- Taybe Housing Secondary School in the same directorate who took the oral proficiency test.

Three instruments were used: An oral proficiency test and two questionnaires which were prepared and developed by the researcher and given to the teachers to reveal the weakness and difficulties of the students and their suggestions to overcome these difficulties.

The results indicated that the female students had difficulties in all the speaking components (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and fluency).

Students were unable to communicate properly, and this may be attributed to the teaching of the speaking skill and speaking components in our Jordanian public schools which demand more attention and emphasis from teachers.
