English Abstract
Biometric identification is an emerging technology which has gained more attention in recent years.
It employs physiological or behavioral characteristics to identify an individual.
Iris recognition systems are among the most accurate of all biometric technologies with massive potential for use in worldwide security applications.
It has been increasingly used with very satisfactory results.
Considering the vast potential and increasing market for iris recognition, the potential for problems caused by patients developing ocular pathology is considerable.
These might include difficulty in obtaining access to personal data or problems with security measures caused by the development of ocular disease any time after initial enrolment and iris capture.
The main objective of this thesis is to present an efficient approach to handle the images of diseased eyes in order to be accepted when verifying the second iris scan for the same person.
This can be done by appending an enhancement step to the iris recognition system.
The suggested approach in this thesis proves its ability to detect the inner boundary of the iris.
Hence, it exhibits 90% success of pupil detection for diseased eye images, which makes iris recognition system effectively deal with images of the diseased eyes.
The Hamming distance outcomes increase when the proposed method is applied, but they are still in the true match range.
