English Abstract

This thesis presents a new technique to count the number of people who enter a certain place depending on the skin detection.

This technique solves a lot of the deficiencies in the previous systems used in counting people, such as some of the density of light or the case of entering more than one person at the same time (simultaneously).

The proposed technique records data by a video camera (VC) fixed in the ceiling of a place and can work properly regardless the height or size of the person and can count the people entering the place in a group and there is no problem if someone gets into the place as another person getting out.

Applying the proposed technique is efficient as it is not affected by other environmental factors (cars, passers by, animals).

This technique is economical as it depends only on one video camera with no need to any other sensors.

The same recorded data can be used to perform many applications, such as monitoring, checking employees and realizing the busiest times.

Experimental results prove that the technique works properly and is able to give accurate results despite some deficiencies occurred due to the sensitive nature of human skin.
