English Abstract
The objective of this study is to develop a guideline for sustainable wastewater treatment by identifying the steps of selecting &evaluating sustainable wastewater treatment system using sustainability indicators tool integrated with multi criteria analysis technique.
The validation of developed sustainability evaluation guideline has been applied on North Gaza wastewater treatment plant as it is the only full treatment plant in Gaza strip.
To achieve this objective, two guidelines were developed after conducting a literature survey of sustainability concept and indicators in addition to revise multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) concept and stages.
The first guideline developed to select the most sustainable treatment technologies of overall process among different alternatives by passing through four main steps.
The first step is to define treatment goal and scope that form the analysis boundaries.
The second step is to develop the list of technically applicable treatment technologies that represent the alternatives of analysis.
The third step is to develop the list of screened sustainability indicators with related weights, measurement units, and standardization methods.
The fourth step is to applying multi criteria analysis after identifying the measurement figures of each indicator for each treatment process and finding the sustainability index for each process for ranking purpose.
The second guideline is used as sustainability evaluation tool for actual treatment plants.
The third and fourth steps of the design guideline are considered in this tool with new evaluation purpose of analysis.
This guideline proposed global sustainability index that express the sustainability degree of plant.
The validation of evaluation guideline on NGWWTP resulted in Global sustainability index of 70% with Very Good ranking.
The results showed that NGWWTP is sustainable wise from both environmental and socioeconomic and institutional categories, but it’s partially sustainable from economic wise since there is no financial recourses adopted for operation and management works.
The research outputs assure the applicability of the proposed guideline through systematic evaluation steps to actual treatment plant
