Abstract EN
It is well known that urinary tract infection (UTI) might trigger a variety of rheumatic manifestations involving the locomotory system.
In this study, six hundred male patients with UTI were assessed for detection of associated rheumatic manifestations.
Recorded articular and extra-articular manifestations were significantly higher in patients with UTI than in controls.
Twenty-six patients (4.3%) with rheumatic manifestations were sorted out of the 600 patients, while only 5 cases (1.4%,) had rheumatic manifestations among the control group.
Positive family history was a significant association.
E coli was the common organism to be isolated in those patients.
HLA-B27 antigen proved to be an associated risk factor in patients having rheumatic manifestations in association with UTI.
So we could conclude that UTI could trigger reactive arthritis in male patients.
E.
Coli is the organism most commonly detected in patients having UTI in association with arthritis in Egypt.
HLA-B27 antigen positive patients are more liable to develop arthritis in patients with UTI.
